Why Specialized Perinatal Therapy Matters
When I speak with prospective clients and ask what they’re looking for, I often hear the same thing: They want support from someone who truly gets this season of life—someone with specific experience in working with people who are trying to conceive, are pregnant, have recently given birth, or are parenting in the early years.
And I get it. I really do.
Becoming a therapist is a rigorous process - graduate school, thousands of hours of supervised practice, and licensing exams. But in all that training, the unique mental health needs of people in the perinatal period are rarely (if ever) discussed.
In my graduate program, and even in my internships, which were entirely centered around mothers and families, no one ever talked to me about perinatal mental health.
No one mentioned the postpartum period.
No one introduced me to Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders.
No one suggested further training.
It wasn’t until I was already licensed, already working with parents, already sitting with the very real struggles and identity shifts of new motherhood, that I realized how much I didn’t learn, and how essential it was to seek out specialized education in this area.
And this isn’t unique to me.
Most therapists simply aren’t trained in the emotional, psychological, hormonal, and relational shifts that happen during the perinatal time. So when you’re seeking support in this season, finding someone who has intentionally pursued further training and experience in this work really matters.
This season is complex. It’s tender. Raw. Identity-shifting.
And the more seen, heard, and understood you feel, the more space there is for healing.
I’m currently accepting new clients, so if you’re looking for support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can also check here for additional perinatal providers.
